Molded Paper Pulp Packaging Application and Industry Suitability Research

The development and continuity of molded paper pulp in China have presented insightful perspectives, especially regarding its application scope and industry suitability. These discussions provide a detailed and reasonable layout of the industrial structure and have played a guiding role in the development of China’s paper-based environmental protection initiatives.

Paper Pulp Packaging Applications

Poultry Egg Trays

Molded paper pulp egg trays, characterized by their loose material composition and uniquely contoured egg-shaped structure, offer excellent breathability, freshness preservation, cushioning, and positioning effects. They are especially suitable for large-scale transportation packaging of poultry eggs such as chicken, duck, and goose eggs. By using paper pulp packaging for fresh eggs, the breakage rate during long-distance transport can be reduced from 8–10% (with traditional packaging) to as low as 2%. In Europe and the United States, eggs are usually sold individually in molded paper packaging boxes that hold six eggs (half a dozen), and the outer surface of the boxes can be printed with various branding elements to enhance retail display appeal. Currently, standardized products in China include those specified in GB 10443—1989 “Molded Paper Pulp Egg Trays,” with models ZDTP-30-40, ZDTP-30-45, and ZDTP-30-50, designed for eggs weighing between 40–70 grams.

Fresh Fruit Trays

Fruit trays can be made from molded paper pulp to fit the natural curvature of fruits such as peaches, pears, citrus, apples, pineapples, and tomatoes—especially for export packaging. These trays prevent damage from collisions, dissipate respiratory heat, absorb moisture, inhibit ethylene accumulation, and reduce fruit spoilage, thus extending shelf life—achieving effects that are difficult for other packaging materials.

Electronics Cushioning Inserts

While foam plastics are commonly used for inner cushioning in China’s electronics packaging, many developed European countries have banned such imports. This has accelerated the shift towards “paper replacing plastic” in China. Molded paper packaging materials offer excellent plasticity and strong cushioning ability, fully meeting the inner packaging needs of electronic products. Their production process is simple, environmentally friendly, and highly adaptable for various applications. Because of this reason, industrial packaging machines are becoming more and more popular.

Fragile Product Dividers

Glass, ceramics, and eggs have traditionally used shredded paper or straw for padding—solutions that are neither hygienic nor standardized, and offer poor shock resistance. Molded paper pulp dividers are easy to produce, uniform after molding, convenient for packaging, and offer excellent cushioning. Since the raw material and process requirements are relatively low, the production cost is controllable, making them suitable for large-scale manufacturing.

Agricultural Tools

Applications include nutrient pots for seedlings and other crops, protective sleeves for flowers and saplings, and packaging for grains, vegetables, fresh meats, or even silkworm rearing trays. In landscaping and courtyard planting, molded paper pulp pots allow seedlings to be transplanted directly without the need for re-potting, as the pots are biodegradable. This saves labor and time, increases survival rates, and proves particularly effective in reforestation projects in difficult terrains such as mountainous or desert areas.

Food and Pharmaceutical Packaging

Beyond fast-food containers, molded paper pulp packaging is suitable for many pharmaceutical products, semi-prepared foods, ready-to-eat meals, and convenience foods—such as vegetable trays, instant noodle bowls, and restaurant containers. These packages are hygienic, user-friendly, recyclable, and environmentally sustainable, aligning with both ecological and health standards.

Medical Equipment

Traditional reusable medical tools risk cross-infection due to incomplete sterilization. Switching to disposable molded paper pulp trays, sputum cups, bedpans, body pads, and splints eliminates the need for sterilization, saves labor, and produces non-toxic waste that can be incinerated safely. The moderate cost of these items makes them widely acceptable and practical in clinical settings, improving healthcare efficiency.

Special Industry Packaging

Certain products are highly sensitive to impact, static electricity, moisture, or rust, requiring extreme care during packaging and transportation. Molded paper pulp packaging, being a neutral material with strong cushioning and plasticity, can be formulated to be moisture-resistant, rustproof, and anti-static. With the addition of specific agents, its performance can be further enhanced, making it a safe and reliable choice across various specialized applications.

Paper Pulp Packaging Production Equipment

The wide application of paper pulp packaging across various industries is closely tied to the advancement of manufacturing technologies. At AGICO, we specialize in providing high-performance machinery for producing molded pulp products, including egg trays, fruit trays, shoes trays, egg cartons, industrial inserts, and more.

Our egg tray machines are at the core of molded pulp production. These machines are designed to convert recycled paper or cardboard into eco-friendly packaging solutions through a streamlined process that includes:

  • Pulping System – This stage involves breaking down waste paper into a fine pulp slurry using hydraulic pulpers, pulp refiners, and vibrating screens to ensure fiber consistency and cleanliness.
  • Forming System – In this step, the pulp is delivered to forming molds through vacuum suction. Our advanced forming machines use precision-engineered molds to create products like egg trays, fruit trays, and medical pulp products. The molds are customizable for different sizes and shapes depending on your product requirements.
  • Drying System – Once formed, the wet trays are transferred to the drying system. We offer metal drying lines, brick drying lines, and multi-layer drying systems to accommodate various production scales and environmental conditions. These systems are energy-efficient and engineered for rapid, uniform drying.
  • Hot Pressing & Stacking – For enhanced product finish and dimensional accuracy, hot pressing units are used—especially for high-end molded pulp packaging such as electronics liners or retail-grade egg cartons. The final products are automatically stacked and counted for efficient packaging.
  • Auxiliary Equipment – We also supply related machinery including automatic packing systems, mold cleaning machines, air compressors, vacuum pumps, and pulp mixers—ensuring a fully integrated production line.

Our machines are available in different automation levels:

  • Manual – Suitable for small-scale or startup operations.
  • Semi-automatic – Balancing affordability with improved efficiency.
  • Fully automatic – Ideal for high-output, labor-saving industrial production.

With over a decade of experience, AGICO supports clients worldwide with complete project consultation, installation, and after-sales service. Whether you’re producing egg trays, fruit trays, industrial pulp inserts, or biodegradable food containers, our equipment is built to deliver consistent quality and high ROI.
